SPIE Photonics West 2012 Poster Award

A collaboration between KU Leuven and the Super-resolution Light Nanoscopy facility at ICFO awarded at BiOS conference.
A collaboration between KU Leuven and the Super-resolution Light Nanoscopy facility at ICFO awarded at BiOS conference.
The poster titled Probing live samples in SHG microscopy using specific markers and fluorescent proteins was presented by PhD student Evelien De Meulenaere from KU Leuven, Belgium, at the BiOS conference at SPIE Photonics West 2012 recently held at San Francisco, CA. The poster shows the results of a fruitful collaboration with ICFO PhD student Sotiris Psilodimitrakopoulos and Prof. Pablo Loza-Alvarez, leader at ICFO of the Ultrafast imaging and nonlinear microscopy group.

The poster shows imaging of cultured HeLa cells by second-harmonic generation and two-photon excited fluorescence performed on an SHG microscope at the SLN@ICFO. The cells are stained with specific dyes, which mainly target the mitochondria. The SHG shows that some of them arrange themselves very nicely inside membranes. On the other hand, the imaging of specifically targeted fluorescent proteins led (so far) only to the first visualization of microtubules in non-neuronal cultured cells. Further research will point out if we can optimize the use of fluorescent proteins for SHG imaging.
