The quantum marginal problem is one of the oldest problems in quantum physics. It asks, given a set of reduced density matrices, when does there exist a global quantum state which is compatible with these reduced density matrices under the action of the partial trace. With the advent of the field of quantum information, the quantum marginal problem has taken on renewed importance. In this talk I will give a broad and accessible overview of the problem, and outline its relevance to various aspects of quantum information science.
