From May 14, 2025 to May 16, 2025

All day

Place: Hotel Calípolis, Sitges (Barcelona)

Condensed matter meets c-QED

Interdisciplinary workshop at Sitges (Spain), May 14th-16th, 2025 (sponsored by ICFO)

Steering committee:

  • D. Chang (ICFO)
  • J. Marino (JGU/Mainz)
  • S. Sachdev (Harvard)
The workshop will be held in hotel Calipolis, in the beautiful seaside town of Sitges (about 30 mins from the Barcelona airport). Sitges is well known for its picturesque old town, numerous beaches, and cultural festivals. Accomodation will be covered for invited speakers.

Recent years have signaled the arrival of a new frontier in quantum optics, to explore strongly correlated light and matter using cavity QED systems. The goal of the workshop is to accelerate these efforts and identify new possibilities, by fostering interdisciplinary discussions between the AMO community and condensed matter theorists whose work aligns with themes of potential collaborations.

Themes of the workshop include:

  • Correlated quantum matter in optical cavities (and their relation to electron phonon systems)

  • Realization of exotic spin models in light-matter interfaces (e.g. spin liquids, spin glasses, etc)

  • Development of state-of-art methods for solving driven-dissipative quantum systems

Invited speakers:

E. Altman (Berkeley), Y. Ashida (Tokyo), F. Becca (Triest), J. P. Brantut (EPFL), A. Clerk (Chicago), N. Cooper (Cambridge), A. Daley (Oxford), S. Gopalakrishnan (Princeton), M. Holland (CU Boulder), J. Knolle (Munich), A. Lucas (CU Boulder), Z. Lenarcic (Ljubljana), C.-R. Mann (ICFO), F. Piazza (Augsburg), H. Pichler (Innsbruck), J. Schmalian (Karlsruhe), R. Samjdar (Princeton), A. Sandvik (Boston University), M. Stefanini (JGU Mainz)

Guidelines for an interdisciplinary talk:

Given the diverse audience of the workshop, we kindly suggest all speakers to dedicate approximately one-third of their talk to motivating their research question in a manner that could resonate with both communities. We encourage avoiding excessive jargon and technical details to ensure accessibility. Additionally, we recommend focusing on a maximum of 1–2 key results, that pertain to the theme of the workshop, to provide a deeper and more focused discussion.
