Lab Magic, or Stuff professors do that astound grad students Abstract: The general rule of experimental physics is that when professors walk into the lab, everyone forms a defensive manoeuvre around the apparatus. Now and then however, experience trumps enthusiasm and your professor fixes something in two minutes that you’ve been working on for weeks. Using (hopefully) amusing anecdotes, and plenty of examples, I’ll try to pass on some of the things I’ve learned from 20 years in the lab. My field of research is cold atoms, but the focus of this session will be on opto-electronics, debugging (anything), and generally banishing the Gremlins from your experiment.
