Lindau Nobel Laureate Interdisciplinary Meeting

Three ICFOnians attend the prestigious 2016 gathering

July 12, 2016
In 1950, as Europe was emerging from the devastation of WWII, an important initiative took root in Lindau, Germany. The first Lindau Conference organizers sent out invitations to the winners of the highest international science awards to meet for a 3-4 day congress to offer European scientists knowledge of the present state of science from the mouths of its most qualified representatives. Today the Lindau Meetings and the underlying idea of creating a platform to facilitate encounters between Nobel Laureates and the world's best young scientists enjoy widespread support.

This summer, from the 26th of June through the 1st of July, 29 Nobel Laureates and 400 young researchers, including ICFOnians Chaitanya Kumar, Irene Alda and Achim Woessner, participated in the 66th annual Lindau Nobel Laureate Interdisciplinary Meeting. These ICFOnians were selected from a highly competitive applicant pool of aspiring attendees and were able to attend lectures, panel discussions and small-size discussion groups. Due to the prestige of the meeting and the profile of the speakers, attendees must complete a strenuous application process, first obtaining a nomination from an academic partner institution. ICREA (the Catalan Institution for Research and Advanced Studies), leant their support to these three ICFOnians to attend as one of the nominating Academic partners. Later these nominations were selected by a scientific review panel appointed by the Council for the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings.

Applicants who have successfully mastered the application process undoubtedly represent the emerging generation of leading scientists and researchers. After the event they become part of a special community – a network of excellence. As alumni of the Lindau Meetings, former participants stay connected with each other and become ambassadors of the scientific dialogue fostered by the Lindau Meetings.

Congratulations Chaitanya, Irene and Achim!
