Fifteen new ICFOnians joined the different ICFO research groups, units and facilities during the month of October. Welcome aboard!

Six postdocs, Job Mendoza, Joseph Bowles, Itandehui Gris, Carles Milian, Daniel Rivas, Matteo Lostaglio,
four Ph.D. students, Carles Urgell, Slaven Tepsic, Zahra Raissi, and Samyobrata Mukherjee, four visiting PhD students, Norma Medina, Marymar Becerra, Philip Thomas, Alvaro Rodriguez, and one Project Manager, Kelin Velez, have joined ICFO in the month of October.
Job Mendoza, who obtained his Ph.D. in Applied Physics from the Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, México is now joining the Quantum Engineering of Light research group led by UPC Prof Juan P. Torres as a postdoc researcher. At the institute, he will be working the study and applications of structured light beams for detecting velocities and vorticity.
Joseph Bowles obtained his PhD degree in Physics from the University of Geneva and is now joining the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Antonio Acin as a postdoctoral researcher. At ICFO he will be working on the device-independent protocols and the characterization of quantum correlations under the AXA Chair in Quantum Information Science.
Itandehui Gris, who obtained her PhD degree in Physics from the University of Bath, England, is now joning the Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Valerio Pruneri as a postdoctoral fellow. At the institute, she will be conducting research in optoelectronics using ultrathin materials.
Carles Milian, who obtained his PhD degree in Nonlinear Photonics and Plasmonics from the Universitat Politècnica de Valencia, Spain, is now joining the Nonlinear Optical Phenomena research group led Prof. Lluis Torner as a postdoctoral researcher. At ICFO, he will be conducting numerical studies of light propagation and soliton formation in nonlinear and anisotropic materials and metamaterials.
Tsuneto Kanai, who obtained his PhD degree in Physics from the University of Tokyo, Japan, is now joining the Attoscience and Ultra-fast Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Jens Biegert as a postdoctoral researcher. At ICFO he will be conducting research in the field of MidIR OPCPA.
Daniel Rivas, who obtained his Ph.D. in Physics from the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics and Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich –Germany, is now joining the Attoscience and Ultra-fast Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Jens Biegert as a postdoctoral researcher. At the institute, he will be carrying out research on attosecond soft X-ray science.
Matteo Lostaglio, who received his Ph.D degree in Physics from Imperial College London, is now joining the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Antonio Acín as a postdoctoral researcher. At ICFO, he will be working on the study of thermodynamic processes at the quantum scale.
Carles Urgell, who received his Master’s degree on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, is now joining the Quantum NanoMechanics research group led by ICFO Prof. Adrian Bachtold as a Phd student. For his thesis, he will be focusing on research regarding mechanical vibrations coupled to electron spin.
Slaven Tepsic, who obtained his Masters degree in Electrical Engineering and Computing from the University of Belgrade, is now joining the Quantum NanoMechanics research group led by ICFO Prof. Adrian Bachtold as a Phd student. At ICFO, he will be focusing his thesis studies in mechanical resonators based on monolayers.
Zahra Raissi, who obtained her Master’s degree from Isfahan University of Technology, Iran, is now joining the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Antonio Acín as a PhD student. At ICFO, Zahra will be working on the study of absolutely maximally entangled states, their application to quantum information protocols, with an emphasis on quantum error corrections, and the construction of holographic codes based on them.
Norma Medina, who obtained a MSc degree in Biomedical Sciences And Technology fromt Guadalajara University, in Mexico, is now joining the SLN facility led by Dr. Pablo Loza as a visiting Phd student. During her stay, she will be conducting research on confocal analysis of different cells under the influence of an optical tweezer.
Samyobrata Mukherjee , who obtained his M.Sc. degree in Physics from the University of Hyderabad, in India, is now joining the Nonlinear Optical Phenomena research group led Prof. Lluis Torner not defined yet- Group Lluis Torner as a PhD student. At ICFO, he will be focusing his thesis on nonlinear optical phenomena research. 1354
Marymar Becerra, who is pursuing her doctoral degree in Biomedical Sciences from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México is now joining the SLN facility led by Dr. Pablo Loza as a visiting Phd student. During her stay at ICFO, Marymar will be carrying out research in advanced light microscopy techniques.
Philip Thomas, who is pursuing a M. Sc. Degree in Physics from the University of Hamburg, is now joining the Ultracold Quantum Gases research group led by ICFO Prof. Leticia Taurrell as a visiting student. During his stay, Philip will be conducting research on the design and construction of an optical lattice and artificial gauge field setup for a quantum gas experiment.
Alvaro Rodriguez, who is pursuing a Master’s degree in Photonics from the Friedrich-Schiller-Universitat Jena, is now joining the Nanophotonics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Javier García de Abajo as a visiting student. During his stay, Alvaro will be conducting research studying the interaction of fast electrons with photonics nanostructures.
Kelin Velez, is joining ICFO as a Project Manager in the Project Managment Unit and will be in charge of Post-Award Management Support.
