SPIE Optics and Photonics Education Scholarship

ICFO PhD student Jordi Morales awarded for potential contribution to the field of optics and photonics

May 29, 2017
ICFO PhD student Jordi Morales‐Dalmau has been awarded a 2017 Optics and Photonics Education Scholarship by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, for his potential contributions to the field of optics, photonics or related field.

Jordi is a joint student in the Medical Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. Turgut Durduran and also the Plasmon Nano-Optics group led by ICREA Prof Romain Quidant. He is working to combine nanotechnology with diffuse optics to determine the best conditions for in vivio photothermal cancer therapy with gold nanoparticles. “My curiosity ranges from translational physics and biology to jazz, music and chess,” said Morales‐Dalmau.

The Society awarded $298,000 in education scholarships to 88 outstanding SPIE student members, based on their potential contribution to optics and photonics, or a related discipline. Award‐winning applicants were evaluated, selected and approved by the SPIE Scholarship Committee, Chaired by SPIE volunteer Jeremy Bos.

Through 2016, SPIE has distributed $5 million dollars in individual scholarships. This ambitious effort reflects the Society’s commitment to education and to the next generation of optical scientists and engineers around the world.
