BBVA Foundation Leonardo Grant for Researchers in Physics 2022

ICFO Prof Pelayo García de Arquer receives prestigious grant

April 28, 2022

We are pleased to announce that ICFO Prof Pelayo García de Arquer has been named one of five awardees of the BBVA Foundation Leonardo Grants for researchers in physics. This grant, awarded to mid-career level researchers whose work has shown to be highly innovative, allows great flexibility to adapt to the specific needs of each selected project, and can be carried out over a period of between 12 and 18 months.

A total of 105 applications were received for this call, with grants awarded to the following researchers:

  • Francisco Pelayo García de Arquer, Group Leader at ICFO.  Project: Accelerated discovery of catalysts in solution (“Descubrimiento Acelerado de catalizadores en SOLución- DASOL).
  • Gemma Busquet Rico, Researcher in the department of Quantum Physics and Astrophysics at the Universitat de Barcelona.  Project: Towards a new paradigm of radio emission in young stellar objects (“Hacia un nuevo paradigma de la emisión radio en objetos estelares jóvenes”)
  • Alejandro Manjavacas Arévalo, lead scientists at the Instituto de Óptica “Daza de Valdés”-CSIC.  Project: Optical response of periodic arrays of nanostructures (“Respuesta óptica de matrices periódicas de nanoestructuras”)
  • María Moreno Llácer, Ramón y Cajal researchers at the Instituto de Física Corpuscular (IFIC, CSIC-UV).  Project:  New analysis of top quark interactions to unravel possible anomalies in lepton universality (“Nuevos análisis de las interacciones del quark top para desentrañar posibles anomalías en la universalidad leptónica”)
  • Oleksiy Nikitin, investigador científico en el Donostia International Physics Center.  Project:  Optical angular momentum to detect nanoscale chiral molecules (“Momento angular óptico para detectar moléculas quirales en nanoescala- nanoMOMENT)

The candidatures were evaluated by a commission of recognized experts in the field of physics, presided over by Rafael Bachiller García, Director of theSpanish National Observatory (Observatorio Astronómico Nacional de España).

Congratulations Pelayo!
