Master in Quantum Science and Technology students visit ICFO
New MQST students tour ICFO facilities and are introduced to new developments in the field
ICFO’s Academic Affairs office welcomed a group of talented students from The Master in Quantum Science and Technology program who have recently embarked on their journey into the world of quantum research.
The Master in Quantum Science and Technology program coordinated by the Universitat de Barcelona (UB) in which ICFO participates alongside the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), Institut de Físics d’Altes Energies (IFAE) and Institut Català de Nanociència I Nanotecnologia (ICN2) attracts some of the brightest minds from around the globe. These students, driven by a passion for quantum physics and the desire to explore the quantum world, were provided a unique opportunity to venture into several of ICFO's laboratories. Here, they were introduced to the pioneering research conducted in our research groups, gaining invaluable insights into the latest developments in the field.
As they continue their studies and eventually embark on their Master's projects, the visit to ICFO will serve as a guiding light to align their academic interests and aspirations with the enticing research prospects offered at our institute across a wide range of initiatives.
Upon their arrival to ICFO, they were greeted by two enthusiastic former Master's students, Diana Mendez Avalos and Alberto Rodriguez-Moldes, who have now progressed to become PhD candidates at ICFO. These MQST alumni, having experienced the program first-hand, provided invaluable insights from their own journeys, bridging the gap between aspiring students and the promising futures that awaited them in the field.
During their visit, students were able to explore five laboratories, each offering a unique perspective and contributing to the rich tapestry of quantum research at ICFO:
- Quantum NanoElectronics and NanoMechanics group led by Prof. Adrian Bachtold
- Quantum Nano-Optoelectronics group led by ICREA Prof. Frank Koppens
- Atomic Quantum Optics group led by ICREA Prof. Morgan Mitchell
- Quantum Photonics with Solids and Atoms group led by ICREA Prof. Hugues de Riedmatten
- Ultracold Quantum Gases group led by ICREA Prof. Leticia Tarruell
Following the laboratory tours, students convened for a seminar, given by Prof. Robert Sewell, Head of Academic Affairs, that provided an overview of the diverse and ground-breaking research projects underway at ICFO. This seminar not only showcased the institution's commitment to advancing the frontiers of quantum science but also served as a compass for the students as they contemplate their final Master projects.
ICFO is delighted to welcome these students as they begin their MQST studies and accompany them as they progress and advance, uncovering a world of opportunities in the field of quantum science.
