Prof. Ignacio Cirac elected as an International Member of the National Academy of Sciences

Membership in the NAS is an important global recognition of scientific excellence

May 14, 2024

The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) was established in 1863 by an act of the US congress to advance science and technology for the benefit of society.  Its primary purpose, then and now, is to provide independent, objective advice to the US government on matters related to science and technology. Through the years, it has played an important role in shaping scientific research and policy, fostering innovation, and maintaining the integrity and progress of science in service to society.

Membership in the NAS is considered a high honor, recognizing global scientific excellence. Existing members elect new members for life, based on their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.

ICFOnians congratulate ICFO Distinguished Invited Professor Dr. Ignacio Cirac, Director of the Theory Division at the Max-Planch Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching, who has recently been elected as an international member of the NAS.
