July 16, 2024

In an event that took place today in the Saló de Cent of the Barcelona City Hall, Barcelona’s Mayor, Mr Jaume Collboni, presented the new Strategic Plan for Science and Innovation 2024-2027, which for the first time explicitly incorporates technology and knowledge transfer to the business sector as a highlight of the growth of the city.

ICFO contributed to the preparation of the Plan, which calls for Barcelona to be decisive in the design and production of electronic and photonic chips, to consolidate itself as the capital of biotechnology and health sciences, especially in the fight against neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and dementias, and also be one of the European capitals in the creation and use of quantum technologies.

Leading research entities in the Barcelona metropolitan area, including ICFO, participated in an Advisory Board which led to the creation of the Plan, which aims to consolidate Barcelona as an internationally recognized city of science and support the research, innovation and knowledge sector, which stands out for its high potential, growth and resilience.

“The research conducted by ICFOians aims at making important contributions to different outstanding societal challenges in different ways and time scales, eventually contributing to the well-being of citizens by making the world safer, cleaner and healthier,” explains ICFO director and founder, Dr Lluis Torner.  “We enthusiastically identify with Barcelona’s new Strategic Plan for Science and Innovation and are ready to contribute to its implementation full steam.”
