The winning students of the #Científiques chronicle contest visit ICFO

The first-year secondary class from Institut Angeleta Ferrer i Sensat visits ICFO and meets researcher Leticia Tarruell

June 19, 2025

The visit was part of the prize for the #Científiques program, an initiative of BIST and the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI), organized as part of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (February 11). During this campaign, female scientists from public and private institutions across Catalonia give outreach talks in schools throughout the region. The program has been running since 2019 and has held six editions so far.

As part of the educational activity, students were asked to collaboratively write a chronicle of the talk given by the scientist who visited their school to share her research and her experience working in science. The first-year class from Institut Angeleta Ferrer i Sensat was selected from among all submitted chronicles.

During the visit, the students explored ICFO’s laboratories and learned more about research in photonics and quantum technologies, guided by Dr. Clara Vilches from the Medical Optics group, and Dr. Lydia Sanmartí-Vila, Dr. Lucía Castillo and Stefano Pedarra from the Outreach team.

They also had the chance to meet and talk with Dr. Leticia Tarruell, leader of the Ultracold Quantum Gases group at ICFO and the featured scientist on this year’s campaign poster. This is a particularly significant year: 2025, the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology.
