April 14: Celebrating World Quantum Day

ICFO celebrates World Quantum Day by raising awareness, inspiring innovation, and shaping the future of quantum technologies

April 14, 2026

April 14 is recognized globally as the World Quantum Day, a date chosen for a symbolic reason: it reflects the first three digits of Planck’s constant (4.14 × 10⁻¹⁵ eV·s), a fundamental value at the heart of quantum physics. The initiative was first established in 2021 by an international group of scientists, members of the Quantum Flagship funded by the European Commission, aiming to raise public awareness of quantum science and technology.

Celebrating World Quantum Day is important for several reasons. Firstly, it helps make a complex field more accessible and approachable, encouraging public understanding of technologies that are likely to shape everyday life applications, from ultra-secure communications to powerful new computing systems. Secondly, it gives visibility to the field and highlights the work of researchers and innovators, inspiring students and future scientists to enter the field. Finally, it promotes global collaboration among the academic, industrial, and educational communities to celebrate the importance of quantum technologies and the impact it is having in our world.

ICFO joins the global community in celebrating this important date, recognizing the value of advancing quantum science, sharing innovation and knowledge as well as demonstrating how this technology may have an impact on our society . Through its research, and different training and outreach programs, ICFO continues to contribute to the development of quantum technologies and to inspire the next generation of scientists.

As quantum technologies continue to evolve, World Quantum Day serves as both a celebration of scientific progress and a reminder of the transformative potential still ahead.
