New ICFOnians

New researchers have joined ICFO.

March 16, 2011
One Visiting Professor, Dr. Boris Malomed; two Visiting Scientists, Mr. Olivier Tieleman and Mr. Jacob Licea; three PhD Students, Mr. Carmelo Rosales, Mr. Vito Giovanni, and Mr. Aboma Merdasa; and one Student, Mr. Erwan Negre have joined ICFO.

Dr. Boris Malomed is Full Professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the Tel Aviv University, Israel. He is one of the leading experts on theoretical non-linear optics, atom optics, and optical and matter wave solitons. Prof. Malomed will join the groups led by ICREA Prof. Maciej Lewenstein and Prof. Lluis Torner to work on problems of joint interest, including novel types nonlinearities, and novel types of solitons and vortices.

Mr. Olivier Tieleman is a PhD-student in Theoretical Physics at Utrecht University, The Netherlands. He joins ICFO as a visiting scientist at the joining the Quantum Optics Theory group led by ICREA Prof. Maciej Lewenstein. Mr. Tieleman will work on several problems related to quantum many body theory and quantum simulators.

Mr. Jacob Licea-Rodriguez is a PhD student at CICESE, Ensenada (Mexico). He works in the development of a femtosecond pulse source for nonlinear microscopy applications. He joins ICFO at the group led by Prof. Pablo Loza Alzarez for a 6 months stay as a Visiting Scientist. Mr. Licea-Rodriguez will study the Caenorhabditis elegans embryogenesis using third harmonic generation microscopy.

Mr.Carmelo Rosales Guzmán obtained an MSc in Optics at INAOE, Puebla (Mexico). At ICFO, he will work as a PhD student at the group led by Prof. Juan Torres. He will work on new ways of enhancing detection of tiny intensity and phase changes using novel schemes such as the use of the spatial degree of freedom of light.

Also joins the group led by Juan P. Torres as a PhD student Mr. Vito Giovanni Lucivero, from the University of Rome. His research will be oriented towards the development of a quantum optics integrated platform using efficient generation of entangled photons using new types of sources, such as semiconductor waveguides.

Mr. Aboma Merdasa got his MSc at the Lund Institute of Technology, Sweden. Mr. Merdasa joins ICFO as a PhD student to work in the in the Advanced Fluorescence Imaging & Biophysics group led by Prof. Melike Lakadamyali using STORM in cellular & biological imaging.

Mr. Erwan Negre studies at the Physics Engineering School of Strasbourg (ENSPS). He joins a training program at ICFO in the group led by ICREA Prof. Dmitri Petrov. He will study the statistics of the recoil exerted by luminescence processes using optical trapping techniques.
