New ICFOnians

New researchers and a new member of the Human Resources and Education
Unit joined ICFO.

April 29, 2011
Three Postdoctoral Researchers, Dr. David Merino, Dr. Sebastian Thompson, and Dr. Alberto Martínez Otero; three Visiting Scientists, Dr. Tomasz Sowinski, Ms. Anna Przysiezna, and Mr. Pawel Mazurek; and a member of the Human Resources and Education Unit, Mrs. Brook Hardwick have joined ICFO.

Dr. David Merino obtained his PhD in Physics at the National University of Galway, Ireland. After several years of research on imaging techniques for ophthalmology applications at IDIBAPS, Barcelona, and the University of California at Berkeley he joins ICFO as a Postdoctoral Researcher. David will join the ultrafast optical imaging group led by Prof. Pablo Loza to further develop microscopy techniques for biomedical applications.

Dr. Sebastian Thompson obtained his PhD in Chemistry from the City University New York. After a postdoctoral stay at the Hunter College at CUNY, USA he joins the plasmon nano-optics group led by ICREA Prof. Romain Quidant as a Postdoctoral Researcher. Dr Thompson will strengthen efforts on the development of new, less invasive cancer therapies based on gold nanoparticles.

Dr. Alberto Martínez Otero got his PhD in Materials Science from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Spain. He joins ICFO at the organic nanostructured photovoltaics group led by Prof. Jordi Martorell as a Postdoctoral Researcher to study how to enhance the performance of organic photovoltaic devices.

Dr. Tomasz Sowinski got his PhD in Physics from the University of Warsaw, Poland. He is a Visiting Scientist at the quantum optics group led by ICREA Prof. Maciej Lewenstein. Dr Sowinksi will work on ultracold lattice gases in the frame of EU STREP NAMEQUAM program.

Ms. Anna Przysiezna is a PhD-student in Quantum Information Technologies at the Institute of Theoretical Physics and Astrophysics of the University of Gdansk, Poland. She is a Visiting Scientist at the group led by ICREA Prof. Maciej Lewenstein to work on various problems of quantum information theory and quantum physics.

Mr. Pawel Mazurek is also a PhD-student in Quantum Information Technologies at the University of Gdansk, Poland. He visits the group of Prof. Maciej Lewenstein to work in similar problems as his colleague, Ms. Przysiezna, both in the frame of a collaboration agreement between the Graduate College in Gdansk and ICFO.

Mrs. Brook Hardwick has been working for the last 12 years in the recruiting department of the IESE Business School at Barcelona. She joins ICFO Human Resources and Education Unit to work in a commercial audit and benchmark for the Global Talent Project.
