New ICFOnians

New researchers and one member of Administration joined ICFO.

November 29, 2012
Four postdoctoral researchers, Dr. Raul Rica Alarcón, Dr. Johannes Guttinger, Dr. Alexander Eichler, and Dr. Joel Moser; four PhD students, Mr. Ioannis Tsioutsios, Mr. Peter Weber, Mr. Alberto Sosa Costa, and Mr. Amit Kumar Prasad; three students, Mr. Philipp Metzler, Mr. Jordi Morales Dalmau, and Ms. Laura García Rico; and one member of Administration, Mr. Albert Mundet; have joined ICFO.

Dr. Raul Rica Alarcón will use Tip-Enhanced-Raman Spectroscopy combined with Optical tweezers and fluorescence spectroscopy to study the molecular alterations of a single DNA molecule extended from the entropic to over-stretching regime. He joins the group led by Prof. Dmitri Petrov.

Dr. Johannes Guttinger did his PhD with Klaus Ensslin at the ETHZ in Zurich. He studied quantum electron transport in graphene devices. Johannes, together with Alexander Eichler, was awarded the SPS 2012 Prize in General Physics from the Swiss Physical Society. At ICFO he will carry out optomechanics experiments on graphene resonators coupled to superconducting cavities. He joins the group led by Prof. Adrian Bachtold.

Dr. Alexander Eichler did his PhD with Christian Schonenberger at the University of Basel. He studied quantum electron transport in nanotube devices. Alexander, together with Joahnnes Guettinger, was awarded with SPS 2012 Prize in General Physics from the Swiss Physical Society. At ICFO he will carry out a mass sensing experiment with nanotube resonators in the group led by Prof. Adrian Bachtold.

Dr. Joel Moser did his PhD with Denis Jerome in the LPS laboratory in Paris. He worked as a postdoc in the groups of Jorg Kotthaus in Munich and Fabio Beltram in Pisa. He studied quantum electron transport in graphene devices. At ICFO he will study force sensing with a mechanical resonator based on a nanotube. He joins the group led by Prof. Adrian Bachtold.

Mr. Ioannis Tsioutsios did his Masters at the EPFL in Lausanne. He joins ICFO as a PhD student in the group led by Prof. Adrian Bachtold. He will measure mechanical vibrations of graphene resonators using plasmonic techniques.

Mr. Peter Weber did his Masters in Aachen under the supervision of Christoph Stampfer. At ICFO he will carry out optomechanics experiments on graphene resonators coupled to superconducting cavities. He joins the group led by Prof. Adrian Bachtold.

Mr. Alberto Sosa Costa has a Bachelor and MSc degree in Physics obtained at the University of La Havana, Cuba (First class honours). During his Master project, he studied the influence of magnetoelectric coupling in antiferroelectric-ferromagnetic systems. He joins ICFO as PhD student within the Erasmus PhD program In Europhotonics to work in the group of ICREA Prof. Maria Garcia-Parajo. In his project we will focus on the effect that mechanical stimuli have on the spatiotemporal organization of the cell membrane in direct relation to function. He will use single molecule fluorescent approaches combined with novel statistical data analysis.

Mr. Amit Kumar Prasad graduated from Cochin University of Science and Technology in India with a Master of Science on "Quantum control of photodissociation dynamics in HD+ probed by intense femtosecond shaped laser pulses using 3D coincidence momentum imaging technique". This work was carried out in collaboration with the Weizmann Institute in Israel. Mr. Kumar Prasad will join the group led by Prof. Jens Biegert to work on the application of ultrashort pulses in the deep tunneling regime and attosecond science.

Mr. Philipp Metzler joins ICFO in the group led by Prof. Valerio Pruneri. He is a Masters student from Germany that will work on the development of high quality graphene on transparent surfaces.

Mr. Jordi Morales Dalmau obtained his bachelor degree in Physics from the UAB and he is currently pursuing the Master in Photonics at UPC. He has joins the Plasmon nano-optics group led by Prof. Romain Quidant to work on Thermoplasmonics, i.e. the generation and control of heat on the nanoscale.

Ms. Laura García Rico is currently studying Biotechnology at the UB. She joins the plasmon nano-optics group led by Prof. Romain Quidant for an internship in which she will be working on photothermal cancer therapy.

Mr. Albert Mundet was awarded a BSc in Physics from Universitat de Barcelona (2008) a degree in Audiovisual Communications from Universitat Oberta de Catalunya and a Masters in Communication from the Universidad de Salamanca. He brings to this new position of Communication Manager at ICFO experience in scriptwriting for programs such as TVE Redes and TV3 QueQuiCom, Scientific Communication for the Parc de Recerca Biomèdica de Barcelona (PRBB) as well as free-lance video creation. At ICFO, he will have varied responsibilities within the Communication team, including content creation for the web as well as press.
