New ICFOnians

New researchers and one member of Administration join ICFO.

May 30, 2013
One visiting scientist, Dr. Michal Micuda; two postdoctoral researchers, Dr. Timothy Miller and Dr. Nichole Cates Miller; one PhD student, Mr. Guillaume Cordier; one Research Engineer, Dr. Joe Borbely; one student, Mr. Christoph Polzer; and one member of Administration, Mr. Adriá Ollé, have joined ICFO.

Dr. Michal Micuda is a visiting scientist from the Palacky University in Olomouc, Czech Republic, who has already visited us a few times. Our collaboration has been so far very fruitful. He will stay with us for a month and a half, and will participate in quantum optics experiments taking place at the Quantum Engineering group led by Juan P. Torres.

Dr. Timothy Miller completed his Ph.D. studying structural phase-change materials with ultrafast techniques at Stanford University and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Now, in the group led by Prof. Simon Wall, Tim focuses on how the electronic, magnetic, and atomic responses of a compound are related when a system undergoes a phase transformation.

Dr. Nichole Cates Miller received her PhD from Stanford University for her research on the structure-property relationships in organic solar cells in the group led by Prof. Michael McGehee. She then studied Li-ion batteries as a postdoc at Robert Bosch, LLC. She now joins the group led by Prof. Gerasimos Konstantato to research hybrid solar cells.

Mr. Guillaume Cordier joins the AFIB group led by Prof. Melike Lakadamyali as a PhD student having completed his Master’s degree at the University of Joseph Fourrier in Grenoble, France. He will work on developing high-throughput imaging methods with high spatio-temporal resolution and apply these methods to studying molecular mechanisms of intracellular transport.

Dr. Joe Borbely obtained his PhD in Experimental Atomic Physics at York University, Canada and spent time as a postdocdoral fellow at the CERN in Geneva and the LaserLaB in Amsterdam. He joins the AFIB group led by Prof. Melike Lakadamyali as a research engineer. He will work on developing software and data analysis tools for super-resolution imaging.

Mr. Christoph Polzer is a student in Physics Engineering at the University of Applied Science Munich (DE). His main tasks are the implementation of polarization sensitive second harmonic generation as well as third harmonic generation microscopy techniques in the existing confocal microscope. These techniques are used for multimodal imaging of Caenorhabditis elegans, since the different imaging techniques provide different but complementary information. He joins the SLN facility led by Dr. Pablo Loza-Alvarez.

Mr. Adriá Ollé joins ICFO’s Project Unit to assist in all aspects relevant to research funding management, including but is not limited to: Search for new research funding interesting for ICFO under regional, national and international competitive calls; Prepare internal dissemination based on the official research calls and aimed at ICFO´s scientific Group Leaders; Assist in the preparation of the research proposals, assuring compliance with the call funding policies and regulations, text structure, etc.
