ICFO honors the life work and contributions of a great physicist to the world of optics and quantum electronics

The laser, of central importance to the world of Photonics and a revolutionary force in technology in the 20th century, was preceeded and made possible by the invention of the maser (microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation). While the Nobel Prize for the invention was awarded to Drs. Charles Townes, Nikolai Basov and Alexander Prokhorov in 1964, Dr. James Gordon’s doctoral work leading to its design and creation were of central importance to its success.
From the very earliest days of the laser, and throughout his distinguished career at Bell Laboratories, Dr. Gordon played a pivotal and pioneering role in quantum electronics, quantum optics and laser sciences.
