New ICFOnians

New researchers join ICFO.

April 16, 2014
One visiting scientist, Dr. Edgar Roldán; two postdoctoral researchers, Dr. Pascal Berto and Dr. Renaud Marty; four PhD students, Ms. Jil Schwender, Mr. Jordi Morales, Mr. Mousa Bahrami, and Mr. César Cabrera; and three students, Mr. Karl Meissner, Mr. Nestor Costa Jimeno, and Mr. Nicolas Morell; have joined ICFO.

Visiting scientists, Dr. Edgar Roldan, will finish four manuscripts, prepared in collaboration with the research group led by Prof. J. M. Parrondo at theUniversity Complutense, Madrid, and will participate in treatment of experimental data on non-equilibrium thermodynamics obtained in the experiments of ICFO’s Optical Tweezers group.

Dr. Pascal Berto carried out his PhD studies and research at the Institut Fresnel, in Marseille (France). During this time his work was focused on the development of nonlinear micro-spectroscopic technics and their application in the field of cancer detection. He now joins the Plasmon nano-optics group led by ICREA Professor at ICFO Romain Quidant as a research engineer with the aim of developing plasmonic- based microscope for biology.

Dr. Renaud Marty obtained his PhD from the University of Toulouse (France), where he performed simulations and experiments on various aspects of nano-optics. Then, as a postdoc at the CEMES of Toulouse, he studied theoretically the excitation and mapping of surface plasmons by using photons and/or electrons. As a postdoctoral fellow in the Plasmon Nano-Optics group led by ICREA Professor at ICFO Romain Quidant, Renaud Marty is currently investigating the manipulation of NV centres in nanodiamond and their coupling with plasmonic cavities.

Ms. Jil Schwender did her studies of Physics at the University of Hamburg with a Master’s thesis on thermoelectric measurements in GaAs nanowires at the EPFL in Lausanne with Anna Fontcuberta i Morral. Jil will start a PhD thesis on mass sensing with nanotube and graphene mechanical resonators in the NanoOptoMechanics group led by Prof. Adrian Bachtold.

Mr. Jordi Morales is at ICFO doing his PhD in Medical nano-optics. Jordi has was previously awarded two summer fellowships at ICFO and also worked on his Master's thesis in the group led by ICREA Professor at ICFO Romain Quidant. Jordi will develop his PhD thesis in which he will apply photoacoustic microscopy to non-invasive biomedical applications under the supervision of two group leaders, Professors Turgut Durduran and Romain Quidant.

Mr. Mousa Bahrami obtained his Master’s degree in Photonics from Shahid Beheshti University in Iran, where he did theoretical work on the properties of graphene nanoribbons. At ICFO, he will investigate the application of carbon nanotubes and graphene nano-structures for nonlinear optics and opto/electro-mechanics in the Theoretical quantum-nano photonics research group led by Prof. Darrick Chang.

Mr. César Cabrera studied Physics at the University San Luis Potosí, in Mexico, and completed his Master’s studies at the University of Bonn, in Germany. In the group led by Prof. Leticia Tarruell, César will work on the design and construction of an experimental apparatus for the study of degenerate potassium gases in optical lattices.

Mr. Karl Meissner is a bioengineering Master’s student at the Universitat de Barcelona. He will work on low cost and efficient SERS substrate for biological applications and molecule detection in the Optoelectronics group led by ICREA Professor at ICFO Valerio Pruneri.

Mr. Nestor Costa Jimeno is a Photonics Master’s student of the Universitat Politécnica de Catalunya. He will work on integrated and fiber optic sensors for the energy industry in the Optoelectronics group led by ICREA Professor at ICFO Valerio Pruneri.

Mr. Nicolas Morell did his studies in Physics at the UAB. He is now a student of the Master of Photonics program at the UPC. Nicolas will carry out experiments on optomechanics in nanotubes in the NanoOptoMechanics research group at ICFO led by Prof. Adrian Bachtold. He will study the coupling between the mechanical vibrations and the excitons hosted in a suspended nanotube.
