New ICFOnians

New researchers join ICFO.

March 05, 2015
One postdoctoral researcher, Dr. Kristian Sexton; two Research Engineer, Ms. Clara Vilches and Mr. Guillem Xercavins; one PhD Student, Mr. Ivan Bordacchini; and ten students, Ms. Ingrid Amer, Mr. Adria Escobet, Mr. Joan Sendra, Mr. Jordi Sastre, Mr. Marc Montagut, Mr. Nicolas Mateos, Ms. Irina Suarez, Mr. Markus von Rudno, Mr. Nicolas Perez, and Mr. Noah Strobel have joined ICFO.

Dr. Kristian Sexton joins ICFO as a postdoctoral researcher in the Medical Optics group led by Prof. Turgut Durduran. Kristian holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering, Dartmouth College, and will be responsible for the development of new biomedical optical instrumentation and their validation and testing on in vivo studies. He will actively seek new application areas from consumer grade to medical grade systems.

Ms. Clara Vilches will soon receive her PhD in Biomedicine from Universitat de Barcelona – IDIBELL. She joins ICFO as a research engineer in the Plasmon nano-optics group led by ICREA Prof. Romain Quidant where she will do research on nano-medicine.

Mr. Guillem Xercavins, a Telecommunications Engineering from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, joins the Solution-processed nanophotonic devices group led by Prof. Gerasimos Konstantatos to develope non toxic nanocrystal solar cells.

Mr. Ivan Bordacchini joins ICFO as a new PhD student in the Plasmon nano-optics led by ICREA Prof. Romain Quidant. Ivan holds a Masters degree in Chemistry- Sapienza University of Rome, and will conduct research on plasmon based chemistry in his PhD project.

Ms. Ingrid Amer, a Physics student at the Universitat de Barcelon, joins the Organic nanostructured photovoltaics led by Prof. Jordii Martorell to participate in a project focused on the search of different routes to enhance the efficiency of perovskite solar cells by means of optimizing their optical design.

Mr. Adria Escobet, a Physics Engineering student at the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya, joins the SLN facility led by Dr. Pablo Loza-Alvarez to work on the implementation of an ultramicroscope for general imaging applications of large tissues.

Mr. Joan Sendra, a Physics Engineering student at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, joins the Optoelectronics group led by ICREA Prof. Valerio Pruneri in order to focus on the development of a particle analyser and scattering meter based on image sensor technology.

Mr. Jordi Sastre, a student in the Double-degree program of the CFIS (Interdisciplinary Center for Higher Education) at UPC studying Telecommunications Science and Technology and Engineering Physics, returns to ICFO, having participated in the 2014 Summer Fellows Program. He will once again work with the Ultracold quantum gases group led by Prof. Leticia Tarruell, designing and building optical superlattices for a quantum gas experiment.

Mr. Marc Montagut, an Industrial Design Engineering student at Barcelona School of Design and Engineering, ELISAVA, joins ICFO in the Plasmon nano-optics group led by ICREA Prof Romain Quidant. He will collaborate in design tasks related to the group’s research projects.

Mr. Nicolas Mateos, a Physics Engineering student at the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya, joins the Medical Optics group led by Prof. Turgut Durduran in order to work on optical monitors for clinics where diffuse optical and diffuse correlation spectroscopies are used to measure cerebral blood flow and metabolism at the bed-side with the ultimate goal of individualized, optimized care.

Ms. Irina Suarez, a Biomedical Sciences student at the Universidad de Barcelona, joins the Advanced fluorescence imaging and biophysics group led by Prof. Melike Lakadamyali. She will collaborate in a project with the aim of determining the antimicrobial properties of structured glass surfaces.

Mr. Markus von Rudno, a Masters in Photonics student in the UPC, UB, UAB and ICFO program, joins the Optoelectronics group led by ICREA Prof Valerio Pruneri to work on multifunctional micro-nano-structured transparent surfaces.

Mr. Nicolas Perez, a Master student in Fundamental Physics at the École Normale Supérieure, joins the Nano-optoelectronics group at ICFO led by Prof. Frank Koppens. His internship at ICFO will focus on graphene opto-electronics in 2d material stacks.

Mr. Noah Strobel, a student in the Europhotonics Masters program offered by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Université Aix-Marseille, and Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, joins the Optoelectronics group led by ICREA Prof. Valerio Pruneri in order to focus on the development of an integrated quantum random number generator.
