Light on the Waves Concert

Celebration of the grand finale of the 4th edition of the science–literature contest

October 12, 2015
On Friday, October 9th, the authors of the winning texts for the literary contest, “Llum a les Ones” (Light on the Waves), along with groups from the Catalan music scene, ICFOnians, friends, family, teachers and supporters of science, gathered for a celebration of science, music and literature.

The Light on the Waves is a scientific contest aimed at bringing photonic sciences closer to society by motivating high school students to think and write poems or short stories about light. For this year's edition, the contest has encouraged participants to write a text based on the evocative science fiction images created by the renowned Frank R. Paul, illustrator of the first pulp magazines in the science fiction field that appeared in the twenties and thirties.

From all the submitted texts, the best writings were selected to be musicalized by up-and-coming Catalan music groups and recorded on a CD-book. Held at the CCCB (Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona), the culmination of this initiative has been the organization of this concert, a special event where winning authors and musicians have been able to share their creations with the engaged audience.

ICFO is grateful for the collaboration and support of CCCB Educació for generously hosting the concert and Daniel Arbós and Màrius Belles from the Scientific outreach radio show “Pa ciència, la nostra” for MC'ing the event, bringing new insights and lots of humor to the evening. Thanks also go to all of the musicians who volunteered their time and creative energy to the project: Carlos Cros, Guillem Roma, Les Sueques, La Meccanica Sonora, Sittar Green, El Punto i The Entangled ICFO Band. Thanks as well as to all the teachers who motivated their students to take part and the jury: Macía Cristina, Laura Lopez and Miquel Barceló Graells, who gave an outstanding talk about the importance of science fiction.
