New ICFOnians

New researchers have joined ICFO.

May 15, 2011
One Visiting Scientist, Dr. Anna Oddone; two Postdoctoral Researchers, Dr. Pablo Romero and Dr. Julia Fekete; one Research Engineer, Ms. Jana Nieder; and three Students, Ms. Irati Golvano; Mr. Igor Swieciki and Mr. Radostin Pavlov have joined ICFO.

Dr. Anna Oddone got her PhD at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, Germany. She joins ICFO as a Visiting Scientist in the advanced fluorescence imaging & biophysics group led by Prof. Melike Lakadamyali. In the frame of a collaboration with former ICFOnian Dr. Carsten Schultz group at EMBL, she will study endocytosis using real time imaging and STORM.

Dr. Pablo Romero Gómez obtained his PhD from The Institute of Material Sciences of Seville (ICMS), Spain. He joins ICFO at the organic nanostructured photovoltaics group led by Prof. Jordi Martorell as a Postdoctoral Researcher. Dr. Romero will study how to enhance the performance of inorganic photovoltaic devices.

Dr. Julia Fekete holds a MSc and PhD in Physics from the Eötvös Loránd University of Sciences in Budapest, Hungary. She joins ICFO as Postdoctoral Researcher in the group led by ICREA Prof. Hugues de Riedmatten to work on the implementation of a quantum light source compatible with solid-state quantum memories.

Ms. Jana Nieder is a PhD-candidate at the Freie Universität Berlin, Germany. She joins ICFO as a Research Engineer at the group led by ICREA Prof. Niek van Hulst to explore the long-lived electronic coherences, up to 200-300 fs, in various photosynthetic complexes. To this end, she will perform phase controlled femtosecond excitation experiments on individual intact complexes at room temperature.

Ms. Irati Golvano joins ICFO for her master project of the MSc-Photonics, Barcelona. She will work at our heterodyne near-field optical microscopy system in the group led by ICEA Prof. Niek van Hulst. Particularly she will incorporate the control of the nm-accuracy delay line into the electronic control system of the microscope, to allow flexible phase-controlled near field imaging.

Mr. Igor Swieciki joins ICFO as a 3-months exchange in Physics from ESPCI ParisTech. He joins the group led by Prof. Niek van Hulst to explore the coherent non-linear response of individual nanoparticles, both dielectrics and metals, particularly the correlation in size and shape of these particles.

Mr. Radostin Pavlov joins ICFO for his master project of the MSc-Photonics, Barcelona. He will work at design and fabrication of complex fractal optical antennas at the group led by Prof. Niek van Hulst. Fractal design have potential advantages as to broad band response, enhanced cross-section and directionality. Inspired by RF analogues he will explore these routes for optimized designs operating at optical frequencies.
