ICFO was the venue of the inauguration ceremony of the Ignacio Cirac – Caixa Manresa Chair on October 23rd. The Program Chair is intended to promote world-class research, outreach and dissemination in the targeted area of quantum information science and technology, as well as to endorse frontier research in general.
Professor Ignacio Cirac, Director of the Theory Division of the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics at Garching, Germany, is a Distinguished Guest Professor at ICFO. He is the recipient of the 2005 European Physics Society Quantum Electronics Award, the 2006 Prince of Asturias Award, and the 2007 Blas Cabrera National Physics Award, among other prizes. He is one of the world’s major experts in quantum physics, having contributed fundamental advances in the field of quantum information science.
The event included a talk by Ignacio Cirac on the state and perspective of Quantum Information. Several members of the scientific and institutional world took part in the ceremony, including Hble. Jordi Pujol (former President of the Government of Catalonia), Prof. Antoni Giró (UPC Rector), Mr. Valentí Roqueta (Caixa Manresa President), and Hble. Josep Huguet (Minister for Research and Enterprise, Regional Government of Catalonia ).
