New ICFOnians
New researchers and one member of the KTT unit have joined ICFO.
June 01, 2012
Three visiting researchers, Dr. Jesus Planagumà, Mr. Andreas Brenneis , and Mr. Uros Ralevic ; two postdoctoral researchers, Dr. Bruno Castro and Dr. Thomas Vanderbruggen ; three undergraduate students, Mr. Sebastian Heunisch, Ms. Yibing Zhao and Mr. Mohamed Sabry; and one member of the KTT unit, Ms. Míriam Martí Pallarès; have joined ICFO.
Dr. Jesús Planagumà received a PhD in Biomedicine from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona in collaboration with Biomedicum Helsinki. He then moved to the Molecular Imaging Centre at the University of Bergen as a postdoctoral researcher. He is currently in a shared post-doctoral position with Hospital Clínic (IDIBAPS) and will work as a visiting scientist in the group led by Prof. Melike Lakadamyali. During his stay, he will be working in single molecule biophysics of synaptic receptor dynamics during autoimmune disorders.
Mr. Andreas Brenneis is a visiting researcher from the LMU and Walter Schottky Institute in Munich. He will work on ultra-fast graphene detection techniques in the group led by Prof. Frank Koppens.
Mr. Uros Ralevic is second year PhD student studying at the School of the electrical engineering, University of Belgrade. Currently he is at the Institute of Physics where he is doing graphene fabrication and characterization. As a visiting researcher at ICFO, Uros will also work on graphene fabrication.
Dr. Bruno Castro obtained his PhD in Chemistry with distinctions at the Centre of Chemical-Physics and Institute of NanoScience and Nanotechnology of the University of Lisbon, Portugal. During his research he applied optical spectroscopy and microscopy techniques to study biophysical properties, including lateral organization, order and microviscosity of multicomponents lipid membranes. He joins ICFO as Postdoctoral fellow in the group led by ICREA Prof. Maria Garcia-Parajo. He will apply single molecule approaches, including superresolution nanoscopy and single particle tracking to elucidate the spatiotemporal organization of immune receptors at the subcellular level and impact in cellular function.
Dr. Thomas Vanderbruggen did his PhD in the group of Alain Aspect under the direction of Philippe Bouyer at the Institut d'Optique in Palaiseau near Paris. He is an expert in quantum non-demolition measurement of atoms, Bose condensates in high-finesse cavities, and quantum optics generally. He is working on quantum enhanced magnetometry using ultra-cold atoms and joins the group led by Prof. Morgan Mitchell.
Mr. Sebastian Heunisch is a student from the Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT), Germany. He will work in the group led by Prof. Valerio Pruneri investigating the RF dielectric properties of different phase change materials. The measurements will be of fundamental importance for future high speed electro-photonic switches.
Ms. Yibing Zhao is an Erasmus Mundus Masters student in the EuroPhotonics program. She will be undertaking her Master’s thesis in the Advanced Fluorescence Imaging and Biophysics group led by Prof. Melike Lakadamyali. She will work on the characterization of molecular orientation in super-resolution fluorescence microscopy.
Mr. Mohamed Sabry obtained his bachelor degree in Electronic Engineering from the German University in Cairo, Egypt and he is currently enrolled in the European Masters in Photonics. He joins ICFO for his Masters project in the group led by ICREA Prof. Maria Garcia-Parajo. He will be involved in the fabrication and investigation of planar photonic antennas for single biomolecule detection using a combination of single molecule methodologies, including fluorescence correlation spectroscopy and total internal reflection excitation.
Ms. Míriam Martí Pallarès was awarded a BSc in Biology from Universitat Pompeu Fabra of Barcelona (2007) and received a MSc in Scientific, Medical and Environmental Communication from IDEC and Universitat Pompeu Fabra (2009). Over the last 4 years Míriam has been professionally specialized in Scientific Communication and Outreach activities. From 2009 to 2011 she worked for the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation. She now joins the ICFO KTT Team where she will be responsible for different ICFO Outreach Programs.
