Identifying Skills, CV & Cover Letter Writing for Academic and Non-Academic Jobs

Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO)

In-person workshop where participants will receive tools on how to identify transferable skills, how to further develop them, and learn how they can potentially be applied in different professional contexts. Then, they will be guided through key aspects to consider writing an appealing CV for academic and non-academic jobs. Topics to be covered: Why a CV is important, Intelligent design of CVs, Importance of tailoring the CV to specific job opening, Differences between academic CVs and non-academic CVs, how to write good cover letters when sending a CV. This is designed to be a capacity-building training session that includes individual and group exercises.

Target group: PhD students, Postdoctoral researchers, and Research Engineers. Priority given to late-stage PhD students and Postdocs.

Available places: 25 

Trainer: Dr. Ana M. Ribeiro

Ana M. Ribeiro is a Biologist from Portugal, where she obtained a PhD in Immunology at Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência in 2017. Shortly after, Ana moved to the University of Maryland (USA) as a Postdoctoral Fellow, and it was during this period that she decided to leave the bench to work “at the bench-side” on science education and researcher professional development. Along her path as a researcher, and largely due to personal experience, she grew an interest in the individual and collective dynamics of early career researchers within the academic system. Ana joined the Office of Intramural Training and Education (OITE) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2019, which propelled her interest in supporting scientists thrive in their careers while developing strategies to promote institutional change. After returning to the Iberian Peninsula and working in the People team at CICenergiGUNE, Ana joined VHIO Academy, the education & training department at the Vall d’Hebron Institute of Oncology (VHIO) in Barcelona as a Research Culture & Development Officer. Ana’s career blends a background in research with science management, human resources, science education and training for scientists, which she uses to learn about what is important for them to grow professionally and to guide them through the many possible routes that lead to their career goals.
