Career Development

Seminars from specialized trainers and alumni help ICFOnians map out their next career options.
ICFO PhD students and researchers develop individually tailored career development plans in conversation with their Group Leader, which are monitored and updated regularly, and supported by a strong mentoring programme to ensure they receive the best possible support, feedback and advice during their time at ICFO.
Future job opportunities are passed on through the Alumni and CLP programme to ensure a smooth career transition following graduation. An ongoing life-long connection to the institute is provided through the Alumni programme, which includes regular seminars with Alumni, and an annual Beyond ICFO careers day.
In addition, ICFO alumni serve as mentors for late-stage PhD students and postdoctoral researchers participating in the ICFO Mentoring Programme. Through these mentoring relationships, participants can explore career paths both within and beyond academia while benefiting from the global networking opportunities offered by the ICFO alumni community.
ICFO Mentoring Program
ICFO Alumni share their knowledge and experience with students to enhance their careers
Mentoring is a key component of professional development, supporting students and early-career researchers as they explore and advance their careers in science. ICFO’s Mentoring Programme connects PhD students with Alumni working across a wide range of sectors, both within and beyond academia, offering guidance through the transition from doctoral training to the next professional stage.
Through one-to-one mentoring relationships, participants gain valuable insights from Alumni who have first-hand experience navigating diverse career paths after ICFO. Mentors support mentees in identifying career opportunities, refining their goals, and planning their next steps, while sharing practical advice on career development and transitions.
The programme also provides opportunities to expand professional networks and build meaningful connections within the global ICFO Alumni community, fostering a strong sense of engagement and support. By combining personal guidance with exposure to different career trajectories, the Mentoring Programme helps PhD students make informed decisions and maximize the impact of their scientific training.
